Greeting Card
April Werle is a mixed Filipino American painter.
”I reflect on belonging as a mixed-race child of an immigrant, exploring how racial presentation affects a person’s inclusion within their cultural communities. Hands are the central subjects in my paintings because of their ability to express emotions and convey stories. By omitting parts of the body, skin color, and clothes I am able to focus on storytelling through the inherently beautiful and subtle body language of hands.
In my recent works some hands are shaded symbolically–some are lighter, some darker, or some mixed, asking the viewer to explore the relationship between the hands and their gradients. How do our biases of culture, race, and belonging inform how we interpret the scene?“
